How to Practice The Four Phrases of the Ho’oponopono Mantra?

One of the easiest ways to practice Ho’oponopono is to use the Ho’oponopono Mantra. It is probably also the most well-known method to practice this ancient Hawaiian healing process.

The Mantra consists of 4 simple phrases: “I am sorry, please forgive me, thank you, I love you.”, and they represent these principles: Repentance, Forgiveness, Restoration, Transmutation, Balance and Gratitude.

Ho’oponopono was developed by Hawaiian Kahunas, and they were very practical. So, although this method is very simple, it’s still very effective.

One of their key principles is: “What is effective is the measure of truth.”

So this is what the Ho’oponopono mantra is all about, saying these four sentences. Who do you tell them to? To existence, to the Divine.

It is a process of rebalancing and liberation.

These four phrases are healing in themselves, just repeating them without having anything in mind, cleanses or purifies the mind. Repeating them over and over again, all together, or just some , in this order or in any order is deeply transformative.

I Am Sorry

This is repentance, you can also use variations of this phrase like: I am sorry, it hurts me deeply, I am sorry. The point is that you feel that this is not right and that you should not continue like this, that you have made things the way they are and you do not feel good about it, you want this to change.

In fact you are saying: “I am sorry for whatever program or memory in me (in my subconscious mind) that creates this problem.” And you don’t need to know what this memory or program exactly is.

Please Forgive Me

This is about restoration or reparation. When you ask for forgiveness, you are taking a step towards solving the situation, you want to reestablish the balance, and you do it through the act of asking for forgiveness. Normally, one says: Please forgive me; but you can also use other phrases such as: please give me another chance, let me repair what’s damaged, let’s restore this.

I Love You

This is the balance, love is the universal balance. “I love you” is not only a joyful acceptance but it is a way of saying: I am happy with you, there are no more guilt or punishment, you don’t have to be upset with me, I’m not upset with you. You can use other balancing phrases such as: May there be peace, May everything be auspicious, I deeply and completely accept you, Let everything become light. This phrase is also about transmutation, the painful memories, which are causing the problems, are released and erased, and are replaced by Love.

Thank You

Some people don’t include gratitude as a fourth phase, I see this as a mistake. Gratitude is the surest way to empower a prayer or leap of faith. It is what moves miracles. You can use any other phrase of gratitude, such as: Blessed are you, celebrate with me, Hallelujah or even if love is a way to thank you, you can say I love you.

I actually like it this way: I am Sorry, please Forgive me, I love you, Thank you. The important thing is that you understand what each phrase does and that you always use the same, so that they gain power in you.

You can use this mantra for any problem or issue you have, this can also be a feeling, and remember you don’t need to know the cause of the problem or feeling. If you notice anything, or if you are feeling upset or sad or whatever, you can cleanse it and heal it.

It is best to use it as much as possible, even without having ‘a problem’. After a while it will become a habit so you are cleaning ‘continuously’ and are cleaning and purifying your (subconscious) mind. And this will prevent a lot of ‘future’ problems and will make your life a lot easier and more ‘on purpose’.
