The Colour in a black and white world: The life of le maître Original

Nicolas Bamert alias The Original Artist

Since 2007 the Original enchants his public with his joyful art and his colours. Transforming reality and normality into originality is his passion. His innocent art is an eye-opener. The beauty there triggers the viewer own joy, playfulness and happiness.

Have you ever thought about what your ideal world would be? The Original Artist offers us with his spaces, places, installations and paintings a glance into an ideal world. A world without limits, that expresses itself through him. No wonder, that if we give his art our full attention, we can connect with the feeling of freedom and innocence contained in it. Suddenly, all the things that often go unseen start to unveil themselves to us. His whimsical creations have a soul, make sense, as if they were inhabited by a consciousness.

Next to his great exhibitions and art-jobs and together with the very talented illustrator Roxane Renard, Nicolas has been working 2.5 years on his comics. A collection of his life, a way out of a black & white life into a life full of colours.

His comics can be interpreted in many different ways. Children can understand it as well as use it in schools, but there is also a much more spiritual side to it. His work showcases a multitude of opportunities of what we could do with our world and what our mission could be. Once each one of us individually finds it, it is an invitation to cling to it, and have the courage walk the path…

For The Original Artist, the comics are an accomplishment in itself: “It’s like getting a diploma after 10 years of study. Like coming out of my whole personal development, my growth, of my creation. It has an immense meaning for me.”

Ever since, Nicolas feels pushed by an invisible force, which gives him the power and the strength to go on. Niki Saint Phalle comes into his mind. “If it wasn’t for her, I’m not sure if I would be doing what I do today. She was my eye-opener to the idea that nothing is impossible. This happened for the second time when I visited her ‘Jardin du Tarot’ in Italy 12 years ago. I said to myself: Nicolas, your life belongs to you, you can do whatever you want. It was the beginning of the ‘Original’.” With his comics, he wishes to offer a similar perspective. “For sure, it’s less than the Garden of Tarots, but it gives the readers an idea. Perhaps it is just the necessary hint to begin an artistic lifestyle. It’s all about understanding that we are able to do plenty of things without necessarily following the rules, prescribed from society”.

In 1996, Jean Tinguely was his first real encounter with art when he was 8 years old. Intrigued by Tinguelys machines that had no apparent sense, made noises, turned on all sides, he understood for the first time in his life that humans can basically do whatever they want to do. Also, it was his first time that he visited a museum with his parents.

There are no coincidences, as 10 years later in the Jardin des Tarots in the Toscane, Italy, he was hit by the same vision again: “This is impossible, so big, so delicate. How can someone do this? Can I do this? It must be incredible to do something like this.”

We believe that since this very moment, Niki and Jean have installed themselves in Nicolas’s heart and in the Originals art. Thus, pushing him to create impossible things, over and over, bigger and better. At first, he took the direction everyone wanted him to go, but he managed to turn around and find himself walking the path of ‘the Original’. In 2017, meeting Niki’s grand daughter Bloum, the president of the Jardin des Tarots, and started to talk ‘collaboration and translations’ of the comics that contains Niki, Jean and his graphic designer La Chapelière was another highlight and mile-stone in Nicolas life. At this point, everything started to connect.

Anne-Blanche Brogler, an instagram follower lately commented one of his posts: “Original is the colour in a black and white world.”
