Always believe in yourself, and if you want something go for it! DJ Martin Garrix

Martin Garrix masters the dance floors with his musical skills. No one remains untouched once he unleashes his energy on all levels. Jean-Claude Biver, the CEO of Tag Heuer praises his Ambassador as juvenile, extraordinarily spontaneous, simple, humble, intuitive and extremely generous in his sharing and in his will to create happiness for others. He was touched by the connection he was able to make.

We wanted to find out from Martin himself what made him the person he is today. How did a 21 year old passionate musician become a superstar DJ in no time?

He explains us how he grew up in a very musical family, and how music basically always surrounded him and shaped his life. With his dad playing the guitar he got inspired to start playing the instrument as well. Being able to play an instrument helps him a lot with his productions nowadays. The key-moment in his career as a DJ was Tiesto’s live performance at the Olympics: “It was at that moment when my interest shifted to the electronic music. I installed a software on my computer and just started messing around with it. And what started to be a hobby became DJ’ing at parties and everything went basically from there.” Tiesto remains his main inspiration. “If it wasn’t for him I probably wouldn’t be doing what I am doing today.”

And how does it feel to make thousands/millions of people dance to your music?

“The most beautiful thing with music is that it connects people all over the world. In my shows I see people from all different cultures, backgrounds, skin colours coming together and enjoying themselves. That’s the best feeling ever. That’s what makes everything all worth it in the end! The people give you so much energy. To see the whole crowd dancing to your music and having a great time together is magical.”

And where is your flow leading you from here?

“I love to explore, find out new things and work with people/artists from different music genres. For me it is important that you can stretch your horizon and keep learning. It’s also a good way to stay interested in music.”

Do you feel ‘free’? And what means ‘FREE’ for you?

“I feel free when I get to do what I want to do without any restrictions.”

Is there a cause you support?

“I try to support a lot of causes because I respect the work they do. I have visited an SOS Children Village and have worked with War Child in February for a gig for example.”

What’s the greatest thing you’ve learned in life so far?

“I think that it’s very important that you’re doing something that makes you happy. If you want something, go for it!”

And what is it, that makes you most happy in life?

“Spending time with my friends and family and making music. I love being able to combine the two. And when I get to bring my friends and family with me to shows.”

Is there something you’d like to tell everyone?

“Always believe in yourself, and if you want something go for it!”
